Our Kindergarten Program
The kindergarten class is a three-hour session, five days a week. Children must be five years of age by December 2. The Lakeside kindergarten is a developmentally appropriate program that emphasizes the individuality of each child in all areas of development. Elements of the curriculum are tied together with changing thematic units, which incorporate math, language arts, chapel, science, art, and outdoor play. Appealing to the interests of the child is always an important consideration.
Because we know that kindergartners are curious, active and eager to learn and that they do this best by hands-on activities, our math program is manipulatively based. Graphing, patterning, sequencing, and number concepts are explored using manipulatives such as cubes, pattern blocks, links and geoboards.
Reading skills are taught not in isolation, but rather through a whole language approach, allowing children to make connections between the vital elements of literacy. Art materials are available on a daily basis and children are encouraged to use their creativity in a process oriented rather than product oriented manner.
As with the other programs at Lakeside, outdoor play is an extension of the program implemented inside. Children are about the business of play!
Enrollment can vary in the kindergarten from year to year, but staffing includes a lead teacher and one assistant teacher. Staffing is appropriate to the number of children so that proper ratios are maintained from year to year.
